How BuildPath Saved Sam & Carla $50,000 On Their Home Renovation

Sam and Carla wanted to maximize the entertaining space at their small historic cottage by turning the detached garage behind their home into a guest suite. They wanted nothing too crazy on finishes, and figured it would cost around $125/sq ft ($50,000 total).

Their first step was to call BuildPath. We worked with Sam and Carla to discuss their budget and gain a clearer understanding of their vision. (Trust me, you and the builder often have different ideas of what "nothing too crazy" really means.)

We were able to meet with three different builders, explain the needs of Sam and Carla, and be their advocate for preliminary pricing. All three builders came back between $89,000 - $118,000.

Once they knew how much it would really cost, Sam & Carla decided they would rather save that $100k until they build their Forever Home.

If they had skipped BuildPath and gone straight into building, one of two things would have happened:

  1. They would have spent $40k+ over budget (and no longer had that money to put into their Forever Home)

  2. They would have had to cut out a lot of the finishes they wanted (and spent $50k just to get an entertaining space they don't love)

By working with BuildPath, Sam and Carla were able to make the best financial decision for their home before it was too late.

Sometimes “No” is the right answer when it comes to renovations. Would you rather learn that up front, or after you've already put tens of thousands of dollars into a project?

If you're thinking about renovating or building your home, it’s worth asking the right questions early.
